Seeking Clarity in the Face of an Epidemic: Dissecting Associations among Trauma,PTSD, and Opioid Use

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the impact of trauma and PTSD on opioid use among community and treatment-seeking samples.
2. Identify factors involved in successful medication assisted treatment among treatment-seeking samples with PTSD.
3. ​Consider future directions for research in the area of PTSD-opioid use disorder comorbidity.

1. Summarize new genome-wide significant loci and DNA methylation loci involved in the pathophysiology of PTSD and the potential implications for developing new treatments.
2. Define accelerated molecular aging as a response to traumatic stress and name one gene hypothesized to moderate the association between traumatic stress and multiple markers of accelerated cellular aging.
3. Describe potential modifiable factors (e.g., social, behavioral, environmental) that contribute to resilience to depression resulting from exposure to childhood trauma.

1. To appraise the use of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) questionnaire as a screening tool.
2. To demonstrate cautions in using the ACEs questionnaire as a universal screening tool.
3. Discuss the importance of patient-centered and trauma-informed approaches to care.

1. Identify immigration policies that impact the mental health of refugees.
2. Identify sources of heterogeneity of prevalance rates of serious mental disorders among refugees and migrants worldwide.
3. Describe a mental health services initiative to address the needs of immigrant and refugee children separated from parents and caregivers in the U.S.
