Trauma, Health and Primary Care SIG
The Trauma, Health, and Primary Care SIG of the ISTSS is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and resources about health and primary care – addressing trauma, PTSD, and other trauma-related mental health issues and concerns in general healthcare settings. People often bring mental health concerns to their primary care provider, and often prefer to receive mental health treatment in primary care. Increasing attention is focused on how best to address trauma and related physical and mental health concerns in primary care settings, including screening, assessment, and initial symptom management. Likewise, there is a need to train and educate primary care providers in how to conduct initial assessment and management of PTSD-related symptoms, both in low- and middle-income countries that lack mental health specialists, and in low-resourced settings and poor/underserved populations in well-resourced countries. The THPC SIG is devoted to dialogue among those who work in these settings or who work collaboratively with primary care physicians, to increase knowledge, share resources, and stimulate conversations about emerging issues in this field.
