Recognizing PTSD Awareness Month

CHICAGO, IL, June 1, 2017 – June is PTSD Awareness Month and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) encourages everyone to learn more about recognizing and treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Traumatic events are shocking and emotionally overwhelming situations that may involve actual or threaten death, serious injury, or threat to physical integrity,” said Associate Professor Meaghan O’Donnell, ISTSS President. “Reactions to traumatic events vary considerably, ranging from relatively mild creating minor disruptions in the person's life to severe and debilitating.”

ISTSS has numerous public resources available on its website (www.istss.org) including the ISTSS Clinician Directory which makes it easy for people to find a clinician, counselor or mental health professional in their local area. There are also public ePamphlets in multiple languages on different types of trauma that can help with recognizing what to expect after a traumatic event, risk factors and how to recognize when professional help is needed.
“PTSD isn’t limited to those in the military,” said O’Donnell. “Anyone who suffers a traumatic event is at risk of PTSD.”

“There are many effective treatments for PTSD,” said O’Donnell. ISTSS’s Effective Treatments for PTSD, Second Edition, was developed with interdisciplinary input of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, creative arts therapists, marital therapists and others. The Third Edition of Effective Treatments for PTSD is currently being developed by ISTSS to include the latest PTSD treatments.

“ISTSS is committed to helping people better understand PTSD and find the treatment that works best for them,” said O’Donnell.

ISTSS is an international interdisciplinary professional organization that promotes advancement and exchange of knowledge about traumatic stress.
