The Dart Award for Excellence in Reporting on Victims of Violence recognizes outstanding newspaper coverage of victims and their experiences.

This year marks the ninth annual competition for this prestigious award, which is funded by the Dart Foundation of Mason, Mich., and administered by the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at the University of Washington in Seattle. Roger Simpson, PhD, is director of the Dart Center.

The panel of judges who choose the award winner consist of three journalists, a victim/survivor representative, and the president-elect of ISTSS. Danny Kaloupek, ISTSS treasurer, filled in for President-Elect Onno van der Hart this year because of travel difficulties for van der Hart, who lives in Amsterdam.

This year, marking the ninth annual competition, the award and a $10,000 prize will go to the Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., for the story "The Short Life of Viktor Alexander Matthey."

The winning entry and other entries recognized for honorable mention can be read on the Dart Center Web site at www.dartcenter.org.
