ISTSS Travel Awards

ISTSS offers a select number of competitive travel awards annually, including a Global Travel Award and a Student Travel Award, described below. The awards are aligned with ISTSS’ Strategic Plan goals of enhancing the society’s global impact and diversity and promoting research, clinical excellence, and innovation.

Global Travel Awards
Each year, some traumatic stress professionals engaged in important and cutting edge research and clinical work in underserved regions of the world are unable to attend the ISTSS Annual Meeting due to financial limitations. A limited number of Global Travel Awards are available from ISTSS each year to support Annual Meeting attendees coming from underserved regions of the world (e.g., low and middle income countries; under resourced communities in higher income countries) and experiencing financial hardship with fees or travel costs. The travel awards are supported by voluntary contributions from ISTSS members and vary each year in terms of availability.
Priority is given to those Global Travel Award applicants whose work has been accepted for presentation at the ISTSS Annual Meeting. Individuals who have received an ISTSS Travel Award in the past are not eligible for another ISTSS Travel Award for 3 years. ISTSS Global Travel Award recipients are selected because they are in a position to contribute to and influence traumatic stress study and treatment in their own communities. They participate in the Annual Meeting to share their knowledge and professional experiences, learn from their colleagues and network with mentors and peers.  ISTSS encourages applications from individuals who will be able to use the information they learn at the Annual Meeting to make a public mental health impact in their local communities. This impact may, for example, be in the area of psychosocial interventions in underserved areas or developing countries and/or may include a ‘train the trainer’ model.
The Travel Awards Committee will identify an active ISTSS member to serve as a Meeting Facilitator for each Global Travel Award recipient to act as a networking partner during the Annual Meeting. The Facilitator’s role is to assist the Global Travel Award recipient in maximizing their professional knowledge exchange during the Annual Meeting, and activities may include helping to identify key Annual Meeting events/presentations to attend, individuals to meet, and ways to become more actively involved with ISTSS. Global Travel Award recipient(s) will also provide feedback to ISTSS regarding their Annual Meeting experience and how it impacted their work and/or furthered professional development.

Applying for a Global Travel Award:
An ISTSS member must submit the application. If the applicant is not a member, an active ISTSS member may apply on behalf of the applicant. Awards will be selected based on applications received by the submission deadline, June 18, 2019. Individuals selected to receive a Global Travel Award will be notified in writing.

The application form should include a statement of need that explains the impact or importance of attending this Annual Meeting, a current curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation, and an estimate of expenses (in U.S. dollars) to travel to the ISTSS Annual Meeting.

Student Travel Awards
ISTSS is committed to providing professional development opportunities for students training in the field of traumatic stress. The cost of attending the ISTSS Annual Meeting is often beyond the financial capabilities of students. Therefore, the ISTSS Student Travel Award(s) are offered to offset these costs when possible for a select number of student(s). The Award(s) are competitive and priority will be given to students whose work has been accepted for presentation at the ISTSS Annual Meeting.

Applying for a Student Travel Award
Applicants for the Student Travel Award must be ISTSS student members and priority will be given to applicants whose work has been accepted for presentation at the ISTSS 35th Annual Meeting.

The application form should include a statement of need that explains the impact or importance of attending this Annual Meeting for professional development, a current curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation, and an estimate of expenses (in U.S. dollars) to travel to the ISTSS Annual Meeting.
